Beauty is Worth the push

While visiting Moab, Utah, my family and I set out to hike Delicate Arch in Arches National Park.

It was our second hike of the day. Earlier that morning, we had enjoyed an easy two-mile out-and-back hike to Broken Arch. The weather was perfect—or so we thought. Eighty degrees, blue skies, slight breeze and a relatively short three-mile hike ahead of us seemed completely manageable.

We started with confidence.

Then the trail began to climb.

What looked simple on paper quickly became something different. To reach Delicate Arch, you must ascend nearly a mile and a half across exposed slickrock. There are no neatly defined trails winding through the landscape. Instead, there are scattered rock cairns and occasional markers that require you to stay alert and pay attention. The path is there, but it isn't always obvious.

As the sun climbed higher, the rocks beneath our feet began radiating heat back toward us. The dry desert air felt hotter with every step. The climb seemed steeper than we expected. We couldn't always tell how much farther we had to go.

More than once, it was tempting to stop.

As we hiked, I found myself encouraging my children—and honestly, encouraging myself.

"Keep going."

"It's worth it."

"We didn't come this far to quit now."

Step after step, we continued climbing.

And then, finally, we saw it.

Delicate Arch stood before us, framed against the sky in a way that photographs never quite capture. It wasn't just beautiful because of what it looked like. It was beautiful because of what it had required of us to get there.

The arch made me think about how many of the most beautiful things in life require a push.

We often begin exciting journeys full of enthusiasm. We dream. We plan. We imagine the finished result.

Then comes the climb.

The part where progress feels slower than expected.

The part where the path isn't clearly marked.

The part where you aren't sure how much farther there is to go.

The part where you're tired, uncomfortable, and wondering if the destination is really worth the effort.

Building a home is often like that.

At the outset, there is tremendous excitement. We dream about the spaces. We select materials. We envision holidays around the table, children growing up in the rooms, and memories waiting to be made.

Then construction begins.

The details require attention. The push to stay on schedule looms. Budgets require discipline. The final layers of craftsmanship and execution demand persistence and care.

The beauty isn't created in the excitement of the beginning.

The beauty is created in the push.

It's found in the commitment to keep going when it would be easier to settle for less.

It's found in paying attention to the details.

It's found in refusing to quit before the vision becomes reality.

Standing beneath Delicate Arch, surrounded by red rock and endless sky, I was reminded that some of God's greatest gifts require effort to reach. Not because He wants to make life difficult, but because the journey shapes us into people who can truly appreciate the beauty waiting on the other side.

The arch was worth the climb.

The view was worth the heat.

The memory was worth the effort.

Perhaps that's true of most beautiful things.

The homes we create.

The relationships we invest in.

The dreams we pursue.

The faith we cultivate.

Beauty is often waiting just beyond the place where we're tempted to give up.

Keep going.

What you're working toward may be worth far more than you can currently see.
